International practice

Our attorneys assist businesses and non-profit organizations from around the world. In addition to providing legal support to U.S.-based businesses and non-profits expanding or scaling up operations overseas, we also assist international businesses as they operate the U.S.

Our experience

Our experience includes assisting U.S. and international clients with:

  • International commercial agreements, including serving as lead counsel for the administrator of a multi-year, billion-dollar professional licensing exam being delivered throughout the U.S. and at international test centers.

  • International mutual recognition agreements, including assisting in the drafting and negotiation of a mutual recognition agreement between U.S. accountancy regulators and the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs.

  • Advising importing and exporting businesses on compliance issues, including employment, antitrust, and corporate law compliance obligations.

  • International litigation, including successfully defending a North Carolina business in alleged vertical restraints of trade litigation regarding distribution of the client's products in international markets.

Our international experience both includes client counseling overseas and experience conducting discovery outside the U.S. We also routinely partner with local law firms in other countries to assist their clients in expanding to U.S. markets.

Our leadership and scholarship

Our attorneys serve as chapter and volume authors regarding several comparative law publications, aimed at assisted businesses operating across jurisdictions. Our professionals have authored and edited numerous comparative law publications and assessments of foreign legislation on topics such as electoral system reform, judicial and legal profession regulation, and human rights. Our firm helped establish, and several of our directors have chaired, the North Carolina Bar Association's International Law Section. Our attorneys have also taught classes on international law; presented continuing legal education seminars on recent developments in the field; and served as consultants on international development projects managed by the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
